Torn Earlobes / Earlobe Repair

The repair of torn or damaged ear lobes is a relatively common request. Ear lobes are comprised of only skin and fat – soft tissues which are relatively prone to injury. While most ear lobe tears are related to earring mishaps, they can result from other trauma as well. Unfortunately, earlobe repair is generally considered cosmetic and is rarely covered by insurance companies. Surgery typically costs between $400-$700 but could be higher with more severe tears.

Surgical repair is generally performed as an outpatient procedure using local anesthesia. The procedure involves removing damaged/torn tissue and placing sutures to re-align the earlobe. These sutures remain in place for one week and are subsequently removed in the office. Discomfort after the procedure is generally mild and subsides within a few days. In nearly all cases the ear will need to be re-pierced. Depending on the injury, this can either be performed at the time of surgery or at a later date after healing is complete.
